Description
Black vultures, Coragyps atratus, constitute the sanitation squads in the southeastern United States. They are scavengers and feed on carrion. In populated areas they clean up road kill and visit garbage dumps. They can be seen making lazy circles high in the sky. Their keen eyesight and observation of other vultures leads them to their meals. They are usually seen in small groups tending their chores. Black vultures are relatively fearless and tolerate being approached but keep a safe distance.
